MCP server for music analysis: connect Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT to a song
October 17, 2026 · 6 min read
The short version
One URL, nothing to install. The Songbrain MCP server is hosted at api.songbrain.ai/v1/mcp and speaks streamable HTTP. Add it to Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT and your assistant can read a song.
Four tools work without a key. List example songs, open a full example analysis or its shot plan, and read the pricing. Good for seeing the format before you spend anything.
Three tools need a free key. analyze_song takes a public audio URL, get_song returns the document, get_account shows what's left. 5 songs a month are free, then $0.50 a song.
Local alternatives exist for raw signal work. hugohow/mcp-music-analysis runs librosa on your machine. The Music Collection MCP manages a local library's metadata. Neither returns downbeats, sections with labels, best moments or lyrics.
Add it to Claude Code in one line
claude mcp add --transport http songbrain https://api.songbrain.ai/v1/mcp
What the server can do
The server exposes seven tools. The first four answer without any key, so an assistant can show you a real response on the first try. Registry name: io.github.songbrain-ai/songbrain in the official MCP Registry. The older path /mcp still answers too.
| Tool | Key | What it returns |
|---|---|---|
| list_example_songs | no key | Real analyses of Songbrain's own songs, to see the format before you spend a song. |
| get_example_analysis | no key | Song DNA, beat grid and sections, best moments, lyrics, scores, story, shot plan. Summary view by default; view="full" adds word timings and beat arrays. |
| get_example_shot_plan | no key | The beat-synced shot plan: every scene with start/end seconds, act, framing, motion, the lyric under it and a ready image/video prompt. |
| get_pricing | no key | Free songs per month, price per song, limits. |
| analyze_song | key | Start an analysis from a public audio URL (MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG, AIFF; 30 s to 10 min). Optional lyrics text for the exact words. Returns a song_id. |
| get_song | key | Status, then the full document once done (typically 60–90 s). |
| get_account | key | Free songs left, credit balance, price per song. |
Check it yourself without a client:
curl -X POST https://api.songbrain.ai/v1/mcp \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" -H "Accept: application/json, text/event-stream" \
-d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/list","params":{}}'Connect it
Leave the header out to use the example tools only. Add it with a key from the Developer Console to analyse your own songs.

What the assistant gets back
One document per song, times in seconds from the start. The summary view fits in a chat; view="full" adds every beat and every word timing.
- song_dna: genre and subgenre, tempo, key and key changes, mood, vocals, instruments, energy, LUFS loudness.
- timeline: every beat, every downbeat, time signature, sections with repeat letters (A, B, A, C) and energy.
- best_moments: ranked windows with start, peak and end, and the reason each one works.
- lyrics: lines and words with their own start and end times.
- story + shot_plan: what the song is about, a world and palette, and a beat-synced scene list with a prompt per scene.

Sources, read on October 17, 2026: hugohow/mcp-music-analysis ("Integrate librosa, whisper with LLMs to analyze music audio", MIT) and gorums/music-mcp-server("Music Collection MCP Server", metadata management and album classification for a local library). Pick the librosa server when you want raw measurements on files that never leave your machine. Pick the Music Collection MCP to tidy a library. Pick Songbrain when the assistant should understand the song: where the chorus is, which part to use, what is sung, what to show.
Good prompts to start with
- "List the Songbrain example songs and open the one closest to my genre."
- "Analyse this song: https://…/track.mp3. When it's done, give me the section map and the best 15 seconds with the lyric sung there."
- "Take the shot plan and rewrite the first three scenes as Kling prompts in a neon-noir style."
- "Compare the energy per section with the lyrics and tell me where the song lifts and where it drags."
Common questions
Is there an MCP server for music analysis I can use with Claude?+
Yes. Songbrain runs a hosted one at https://api.songbrain.ai/v1/mcp (streamable HTTP). Without an API key Claude can open real example analyses: beat grid, sections, best moments, lyrics, story and a shot plan. With a free key (5 songs a month) it can analyse your own song from a public audio URL with the analyze_song tool. In Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http songbrain https://api.songbrain.ai/v1/mcp. It is listed in the official MCP Registry as io.github.songbrain-ai/songbrain.
Does the Songbrain MCP server work with Cursor and ChatGPT?+
Yes. Cursor reads a mcpServers entry with the URL and an optional Authorization header. ChatGPT connects remote MCP servers as custom connectors in developer mode (Settings → Connectors → Advanced); availability depends on your ChatGPT plan, so check OpenAI's current help pages for the exact menu. Any other client that speaks streamable HTTP works the same way.
What is the difference between Songbrain's MCP and hugohow/mcp-music-analysis?+
hugohow/mcp-music-analysis runs on your own machine with librosa and returns signal measurements (beats, onsets, duration, MFCCs, spectral centroid) for local files. It is MIT-licensed and free. Songbrain is hosted, so nothing to install, and returns interpreted results on top of the signal: downbeats, sections with repeat letters, the best moments with reasons, word-timed lyrics, the song's story and a shot plan. It costs $0.50 a song after 5 free songs a month.
Does the MCP server need my audio to be public?+
The analyze_song tool takes a public http(s) URL because MCP clients can't upload files through the protocol yet. For private files, use the REST API (POST /v1/songs with a multipart upload) and read the result with get_song in the MCP, or just use the REST API end to end.
What does an analysis cost through MCP?+
Same as the REST API: every account has 5 free songs a month, then 25 credits (about $0.50) a song. The example tools and get_pricing are free and don't need a key. Uploaded audio is used for the analysis only, never for training, and is deleted within 24 hours.
