How to Make Afrobeats in 2026

Afrobeats is now the third-fastest-growing genre on Spotify globally, behind only Latin and K-Pop. Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, Asake, Tyla — each have proved that African-rooted production travels everywhere. The genre's template, though, is specific. Get it wrong and you make "afro-flavored pop." Get it right and the rhythm carries the song.

This is the production breakdown for indie producers and indie artists working outside the Lagos studio system who want their Afrobeats to actually hit.

1. The log drum is the rhythmic centre

Modern Afrobeats borrowed log-drum sound design from Amapiano (the South African export that fused into Afrobeats around 2022-23). The log drum — pitched between F1 and A1, tuned to the key of the song — sits where a 808 would sit in trap. But it's not a static one-bar loop. Log drum patterns move: triplet shuffles on the 3rd beat, ghosted hits, occasional pitch slides into the chorus.

Production check:if your log drum could be removed and replaced with a generic 808 without affecting the song's identity, you're not using it Afrobeats-correctly. It should carry both the sub-bass and the melodic contour. Pitch-bend automation between bars.

2. Polyrhythmic percussion stacks

Afrobeats descends from West African polyrhythmic tradition (Highlife, Fuji, Yoruba drumming). The percussion is not a one-bar loop on a 1/16 grid. It's multiple grids running simultaneously:

3. BPM: the 2026 wave is slower

Afrobeats BPM has been drifting down. 2018-2021 sat around 115-125 BPM. The 2022-23 wave dropped to 110-118 BPM. The current 2025-26 sound (Rema's HEIS era, Wizkid's Morayo, Asake's Lungu Boy) lives at 100-112 BPM.

4. Lagos-dry vocal mixing

US pop mixes vocals wet — long reverb, plate effects, lush stereo width. Lagos mixes vocals close, dry, and audibly compressed. The vocal sits two inches from your face. There's minimal reverb, often just a 80-120ms slap delay panned slightly. Compression is heavy and you hear it working.

This sounds "wrong" to ears trained on US pop standards. It's the sound of the genre. Listen to Burna Boy's African Giant, Tems' If Orange Was a Place EP, anything Asake — the vocals are stunningly dry. That intimate, close presence is part of what makes Afrobeats vocals identifiable in the first two seconds of a clip.

5. Pidgin phrasing as a hook engine

Pidgin English (Nigerian, Ghanaian) provides Afrobeats with its distinctive vocal cadence: call-response, dropped articles ("I go," "you no sabi"), conversational vocal punctuation. Even when the lyrics are fully English, the rhythm of the words follows Pidgin patterns.

The hooks that have travelled globally — Tems' "Free Mind," Asake's "Lonely At The Top," Rema's "Calm Down," Tyla's "Water" — all use Pidgin-cadence phrasing even when English is the surface language. Write your hook out loud, not on paper. Find a cadence that swings against the polyrhythmic percussion.

6. The TikTok hook position (0:08-0:18)

Classic Afrobeats opened with a 20-30 second percussion intro before the vocal hook arrived. That arrangement still works for the album cut and for Spotify Discover Weekly placement. For TikTok virality, it doesn't.

The 2026 fix is a dual arrangement: the album version keeps the long intro for sonic depth and replay value; the TikTok-edit version pulls the hook to 0:08-0:18. Same vocal, different arrangement. 7. Distribution that respects the home market

Afrobeats virality almost always starts in the African home market and propagates outward. Distributing only to Spotify + Apple + Tidal skips the velocity engine that makes the global breakthrough possible.
