Only 8% of 316 uploaded songs passed all four release checks. Loudness near −14 LUFS, true peak under −1 dBTP, a first peak inside 12 seconds, four minutes or under. 24 songs cleared every gate.

Most songs fail on the mix, not the music. 54% were outside the loudness window and 35% were clipping at the peak. Those two are fixable in an afternoon — and they are the ones that make a release sound cheap on a phone speaker.

You have a Suno song you like. It has been sitting in your library for a week and every time you play it back you think: is this actually good, or do I just like it because I made it? The honest answer is that you cannot tell by listening — we wrote a whole guide on why you are the last person who can. What you can do is measure the things that decide whether a release sounds finished, and compare against what everyone else is uploading.

So we did that. 446 songs from independent artists went through Songbrain between May and September 2026 — Suno and Udio exports, DAW bounces, a few finished masters. We removed our own and every test account, took the 316 songs with complete measurement data, and ran them through four checks anyone can do before hitting distribute. 8% passed.

Check 1: Loudness — 54% fail

Streaming platforms normalise to a reference level; Spotify's is −14 LUFS. Land near it and your song plays back the way you mixed it. Come in much louder and the platform turns you down, taking your punch with it; come in much quieter and you sit under everything else on the playlist. The median upload measured −13.2 LUFS — close — but only 42% were within a decibel of the target. 31% were louder than −12 LUFS, and 18% louder than −10, which is the range where Spotify's turn-down is audible and Apple's (around −16) is dramatic.

Check 2: True peak — 55% fail

This is the one nobody checks. When a platform converts your file to a lossy stream, the encoder can push peaks above where they were — so a master that sits at 0 dBFS distorts after upload even though it sounded clean in your headphones. The safe ceiling is −1 dBTP. 35% of uploads peaked at or above −0.1 dBTP — effectively clipping — and 57% were above −1. 23% were both louder than −12 LUFS and clipping, which is the combination that sounds crushed on a phone speaker.

The fix is a limiter with a true-peak ceiling at −1 dBTP, applied once, on the release file. It costs nothing in perceived loudness and it is the difference between a song that survives the encoder and one that does not.

Check 3: First peak by 0:12 — 53% fail

Listeners on streaming decide within the first few seconds whether to skip, and every skip inside 30 seconds counts against the song. The measurable proxy is when the first energy peak lands — the first moment the track fully arrives. The median upload peaked at 12.6 seconds; 53% missed the 12-second mark and 42% were still building at 15. Our 12-second rule guide explains where that threshold comes from.

For a Suno song the fix is usually a trim, not a regeneration: cut the intro down to the bar before the first real entrance. If you are also making clips from the song, note that the strongest 15 seconds sit somewhere else entirely — on average at 1:29 — which we measured in a separate data post.

Check 4: Length — 31% fail

The median upload ran 3:16. 27% ran over four minutes and 43% over 3:30. Length did not move the score much on its own — songs over four minutes averaged 75 versus 77 for everything shorter — but a long AI song tends to be long because a section repeated, not because it earned the time. If your track is over four minutes and you cannot name what the last minute adds, cut it. Genres with a long-form tradition are the exception, and you know if you are in one.

Check 5: What the score is made of

The last check is not a gate; it is how you read the result. Across all 446 uploads the median Virality Score was 78, and 91% of songs landed between 70 and 89. The top 10% start at 85; only 2.5% reached 90. So a 78 is not a green light — it is the middle of the pack. What separates the top from the middle is in the breakdown.

And the breakdown has a shape. Production quality scored a median 85, with 82% of songs at 85 or above. Originality scored a median 70, with 35% of songs at 65 or below. Memeability — how likely a moment is to get reused — was the lowest virality sub-score at 60. That is the AI-song pattern in numbers: polished, well-mixed, and built from ideas the model has heard ten thousand times. If that is your breakdown, another pass on the master will not help; this is what to change instead.

The five-minute version

  1. Loudness near −14 LUFS (within 1 dB). Above −12: turn it down.
  2. True peak under −1 dBTP. Limiter on the release file, once.
  3. First peak inside 0:12. Trim the intro if it is not.
  4. Length 4:00 or under, unless the genre says otherwise.
  5. Breakdown: fix the lowest sub-score, ignore the headline number.

92% of the songs in this data set would have failed at least one of the first four. Almost all of those failures were on loudness or peak — the two that take an afternoon to fix and that nobody hears in the studio but everyone hears on a phone.
